Frequently Asked Questions

Gentle, effective Pilates in Broughty Ferry, Dundee – for people who want to move well, feel strong, and stay mobile at every age.

What is Pilates and how is it different from other forms of exercise?

Pilates is a low-impact ( as in not hard on your joints), whole-body form of exercise that helps you build core strength, improve posture, support your joints, and move more freely. It’s especially helpful for reducing aches and pains and gently improving mobility.

Unlike yoga, which focuses more on stretching and holding poses, Pilates is all about controlled movement, posture, and alignment. It’s ideal if you want to feel more in tune with your body and move with confidence—without needing to be bendy or fit!

Who is Pilates suitable for?

Everyone! But especially people like you—perhaps you’re 40 + dealing with stiffness, or just getting back into movement after a break or an injury.

My Pilates classes in Broughty Ferry and online are designed for beginners and older adults. I specialise in supporting women who want to feel steadier, stronger, and more at home in their bodies—whether you’re managing arthritis, recovering from an injury, or simply wanting to feel better day-to-day.

Do I need to be flexible or fit to start Pilates?

Not at all! Most of my clients start Pilates because they feel stiff, tired, or a bit disconnected from their bodies. You don’t need to be flexible or have any previous experience. We take it slowly, and I offer simple, clear instructions to help you feel safe and supported every step of the way.

Why do I need a one-to-one session before joining a class?

The one-to-one is where it all begins. Whether you’re joining an in-person Pilates class in Dundee or one of my online sessions, to get the best results we start with a personalised Pilates session. Firstly, I ask you about your health, your goals, and how your body moves, and any concerns you have.

During this session, I’ll help you start learning how to truly connect with your body—how to gently engage the right muscles, improve posture, and become aware of how you move. Many people tell me they leave their personalised Pilates session feeling taller, more confident, and feeling just good in their bodies. starting this way also means you’ll get the most out of every future class.

What types of classes do you offer?

In-Person Group Classes (Broughty Ferry & Dundee): Small, relaxed groups with personal attention and a lovely sense of community. These are great if you enjoy moving with others but still want to feel individually supported.

One-to-One Sessions: These are essential for new clients and perfect if you want something tailored just to you—especially helpful if you’re recovering from injury, managing a health condition, or feeling unsure about movement.

Online Pilates Classes (UK-wide): beginner-friendly. Clear instructions, gentle progressions, and no need to be tech-savvy—I’ll help you get set up!

Can Pilates help with back pain, arthritis, or joint issues?

Yes—Pilates is known for helping people manage and reduce pain. It’s especially effective for back pain, stiffness, postural problems, and joint issues like arthritis.

I draw on my experience as an Occupational Therapist to adapt every movement to suit your body. You’ll learn to move safely and comfortably, using small, meaningful movements that support your body where it needs it most.

Will I lose weight or tone up with Pilates?

Pilates helps you build lean muscle, improve posture, and feel stronger and more energised. While it’s not a high-intensity workout, many women find that over time they feel lighter, taller, and more toned—and often more confident in their clothes too! For weight loss, Pilates is a great complement to other gentle activity and a balanced lifestyle.

How often should I do Pilates?

Ideally 2–3 times a week, but even one session a week can make a big difference—especially if you’re just getting started. Some clients enjoy doing a weekly class and then use my online classes in between. I’ll help you find a rhythm that works for your life.

How long will it take to feel results?

You might feel a difference in how you move after just a few sessions. Many people notice improved posture, reduced aches, and more body awareness within the first few weeks. !

What should I wear or bring to class?

Just wear something comfortable you can move in—like leggings, joggers, and a soft top. You don’t need fancy gear. A mat is needed for the classes held at St Stephen’s and West church.

I have mats in my studio for personalised Pilates sessions and the classes held there.

Where are your in-person Pilates classes held?

I teach in my own studio in Broughty Ferry, for personalised Pilates sessions, and some of the classes and my Monday classes are held at St Stephens and West church, Broughty Ferry, Dundee.

I’m feeling nervous about starting – is that normal?

Yes, and you’re not alone. Many of my clients were anxious at first—worried they’d feel out of place or wouldn’t be able to keep up. But because we start with a private one-to-one session, you’ll feel ready and confident by the time you step into a group or log into your first online class.

This is a space for you to feel cared for, listened to, and gently guided. You’ll never be asked to push through pain or do anything that doesn’t feel right in your body.
